I went to the University of Illinois (Urbana) and received BS degrees in computer science and computer engineering, and then went to the University of California (Berkeley) where I received MS and PhD degrees in Computer Science. I spent my entire career as a university professor, spending most of this time at Georgia Tech in Atlanta. In other words, I've been in school all of my life!
My university research focused on developing new computer technologies related to the simulation of complex systems in areas such as transportation and telecommunications, among others. Perhaps my most noteworthy accomplishment in research is I was one of the technical leads in defining something called the High Level Architecture for Modeling and Simulation that would become the standard for all modeling and simulation in the U.S. Department of Defense. At Georgia Tech I led the creation of a new department focused on computer models called the School of Computational Science and Engineering (CSE). This activity involved hiring its faculty and staff and creating new graduate degree programs (MS and PhD in CSE, among others) as well as the development of undergraduate curriculum.
In my personal life, I met my wife Jan at Berkeley. Together we raised a son Alex and daughter Emily. We have been very fortunate in life, and have lived happily near Atlanta Georgia for many years.
