I studied mechanical engineering at IIT (BS, 1977) and Lehigh University (PhD, 1983). I worked on submarine technology at General Dynamic Corp/Electric Boat Division in Groton CT for a couple of years before joining the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Washington DC. My career at NRL has focused to date on ship technologies, a range of materials science issues, warfighter biomechanics and body armor. I currently lead NRL's Materials Science and Component Technology Directorate. My wife Maria is an education consultant for developing countries. We have two children, Martina and Alexander, who are in elementary school and keep us quite busy. My hobbies include cycling and history.
